Hair dye for men – grey coverage made simple

Hair dye for men looks very natural. It subtly covers your first grey hairs and refreshes your natural hair colour. Such products cater especially to men’s unique needs. They are easy to apply and don’t require much effort. They also contain well-tolerated ingredients that care for the scalp and hair.

Hair dye for men: which colours look more natural?

While women usually go for classic shades or trendy colours, most men prefer dyes that conceal their first grey hairs and give hair a fuller appearance. Simple comb highlights have the most natural effect as they gently blend in with the rest of the hair.

There is also nothing stopping you from using women's hair dye. But you should be aware that men often have ashier hair than women, meaning that colouring can result in a reddish tint. Matte cool shades or natural hair colours are best for a natural result.

A tint is ideal if you don’t want to permanently dye all your hair. It doesn’t cover greys as much as colouring but it generally appears very natural. The colour lasts for about six weeks. It fades over time as hair is washed, creating a subtle wash-out effect.

To ensure that the dye is barely visible, the tone or colour should be based on your natural hair colour and be no more than one shade darker or lighter. If you are hesitating between two shades, choose the lighter one. It conceals thinning roots and grey hairs. The manufacturer displays before and after images of different natural hair colours on the box so you can get an idea of what to expect.

Tip: if you don’t find the idea of hair dye appealing, try a colour shampoo. The colour of your hair gets stronger with every wash without appearing dyed.

What do you need to dye your hair?

The most important utensils are already contained in the men's hair dye box, including a pair of single-use gloves to stop your hands from getting stained. You also need:

  • Combs: If you have long or thick hair, you can use large combs to divide it into separate sections. This allows you to be more precise and gives even results.
  • Towel: it doesn't have to be a hairdressers gown, put an old towel around your shoulders and it will stop dye from getting on your clothes or skin.
  • Cream and Vaseline: before dyeing your hair, rub a greasy skin cream on the areas surrounding the face and ears and it will be easier to wipe off any product residue. This will prevent you from staining your skin.

You can also apply the dye with a paint brush instead of the applicator. Put it in a mixing bowl first. This makes it easier to apply evenly. It does take some skill, though. It's easier if someone helps you to dye your hair.

How do you use hair colour for men?

Many manufacturers of hair colour for men prefer a straightforward application. Sets which you mix in advance are common. These include an applicator bottle, a developer, and a tube of toner. After mixing both components in the bottle, you twist on a special applicator that facilitates application.

One-twist hair dyes are the easiest to use because the dye and the developer are contained in the same bottle. Turn the lid and then shake so the components mix together. Apply the dye evenly across your hair using the comb provided. Most hair dyes for men discreetly hide your first grey hairs within five minutes of application time. Leave them on for another five minutes for a more intensive result. After the development time is up, rinse out the residue until the water runs clear.
