Mud masks: Natural care for skin that is soft to the touch
Mud masks contain many natural active ingredients that care for and pamper the skin. Mud can have a cleansing and anti-inflammatory effect and a mask allows its valuable ingredients to be absorbed deep into the skin. After a mud mask, the skin feels soft and silky, a feeling reflected in your overall sense of well-being.
There are a number of different kinds of mud masks, such as fango packs, healing earth masks, clay masks or Dead Sea mud masks. They contain mud taken from waters that are rich in valuable minerals and essential nutrients. Best known is the Dead Sea in Israel and Jordan, which has water and mud that can have a healing effect on the skin.
How do mud masks work?
Mud masks are very often completely natural and have no chemical additives or fragrances. Many of the other ingredients in mud masks are also of natural origin, such as Aloe Vera or chamomile, which also soothe and moisturise the skin. Sensitive skin in particular benefits from the natural nature of mud masks. They:
- are anti-inflammatory
- refine the pores
- smooth
- cleanse
They can also alleviate the discomfort of various skin problems and are good for people with acne, pimples or blackheads. For example, a healing clay face mask acts like a magnet on the skin and literally draws sebum and oil out of the pores. This helps the skin to clear up pimples and skin impurities. The regular use of mud face masks can even alleviate certain skin conditions, including:
- Neurodermatitis
- Dandruff
- Eczema
Regular use can effectively refine skin texture and help relieve rashes and flaky skin.
How to apply a mud mask?
It is best to warm the mud mask slightly before use. Its effect unfolds to perfection at 45 to 50 degrees Celsius and is deeply absorbed into the skin. The heat opens the pores and the skin becomes more receptive to its active ingredients. The mask should only be applied to cleansed skin. Sometimes it is not possible to heat the mask beforehand. For this reason, there are also masks that can be applied at room temperature.
Mud masks should be left on for at least half an hour. You should not leave them on your skin for longer than an hour, as they lose their effect after that and no further active ingredients are absorbed into the skin. After use, make sure to rinse off the mask thoroughly so that no residue remains. We recommend applying a rich face cream afterwards.
When should you use a healing clay mask?
Healing clay is considered a tried-and-tested natural remedy and is now often used as an active ingredient in various cosmetic products. It contains a host of valuable minerals and trace elements:
- Calcium
- Magnesium
- Iron
- Zinc
- Sodium
- Silicic acid
- Selenium
Healing clay can help to relieve inflammation, itching and soreness. This is why it is often used for blemished or oily skin, as well as for acne, rashes or neurodermatitis.
Healing clay masks are first applied to the face like a cream in a moist form. They dry on the face while taking effect, absorbing excess oil, bacteria and other metabolic products. These substances are then removed from the skin along with the healing clay mask when it is washed off, leaving the pores clean again.
