Sunburn isn’t just unpleasant, it can also cause long-term skin damage. Effective skin protection is always important, especially in summer, when the days are longer and the sun is more intense. But what exactly is sunburn and what can we do if we get sunburnt?
Sunburn occurs when the skin is exposed to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays for too long without protection. This leads to an inflammatory reaction that is typically associated with redness, pain and in severe cases even blistering. In the long term, repeated sunburn can increase the risk of skin cancer and cause the skin to age prematurely.
Fast first-aid for sunburn
Sunburn can be very unpleasant, but if you take the right measures you can alleviate discomfort and promote healing. Here are some tips:
- Cool the skin: Use cold, damp cloths or take a cool shower to reduce heat and relieve pain.
- Moisturise: Apply aftersun products containing aloe vera or moisturising lotions to soothe and hydrate the skin.
- Drink plenty of water: Sunburn can cause dehydration. Make sure you drink enough fluids to support your body. Stay out of the sun: Protect the affected areas of skin from the sun by staying in the shade and wearing protective clothing.
- Take painkillers: For severe pain, over-the-counter painkillers such as Ibuprofen can help to relieve discomfort and inflammation.
